American and Six Ukrainians Face Immigration Charges, Not Terror Counts
What Happened
The NIA has filed a chargesheet against US national Matthew Aaron Van Dyke and six Ukrainian nationals, but has not invoked anti-terror provisions of the UAPA. Instead, the seven have been charged under the Immigration and Foreigners Act for alleged illegal entry, stay and movement in India. The group was earlier accused of training ethnic armed groups in Myanmar.
Key Takeaways
While terror charges have been dropped from the current chargesheet, the NIA told the court that the UAPA investigation remains open and a supplementary chargesheet could be filed if further evidence emerges.
