Brain Study Suggests Personalized Social Media Feeds May Deepen Negative Moods

Published: 28 August 2026 · 1 min read

What Happened

Researchers at the University of Texas at Dallas used brain scans (EEG) to study how people react to social media content recommended by algorithms. In a study of 60 young adults, participants viewed videos from their own Instagram and TikTok feeds as well as general trending content. The researchers found that personalized recommendations were linked to brain activity associated with more negative emotional processing and were also connected to higher depressive symptoms

Key Takeaways

The findings suggest that the impact of social media is not just about screen time, but also about what algorithms choose to show users. Personalized feeds may reinforce existing emotional states, potentially creating a feedback loop that amplifies negative moods over time.
