Centre Hikes Petrol Export Tax, Cuts ATF Levy in Latest Fuel Duty Review
What Happened
The Centre has raised the windfall tax on petrol exports to ₹1.5 per litre from zero and increased the levy on diesel exports to ₹25 per litre from ₹24 per litre. At the same time, it has reduced the export duty on aviation turbine fuel (ATF) to ₹19 per litre from ₹19.5 per litre. The revised rates took effect from September 1 as part of the government's fortnightly review of fuel export duties.
Key Takeaways
The move reverses the previous relief given to petrol exporters and reflects the government's efforts to manage domestic fuel availability amid volatile global energy markets. There is no change in excise duties on petrol and diesel sold in India, meaning retail fuel prices remain unaffected by this revision.
