What Happened

The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS) under the Ministry of Jal Shakti has advised all States and Union Territories to begin geo-tagging rural water supply sources and post-monsoon water quality testing from October 2. They have also been asked to organize ‘Jal Arpan’ activities in as many Gram Panchayats as possible, under the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) 2.0.

Key Takeaways

The initiative aims to improve monitoring of rural drinking water infrastructure, ensure water quality after the monsoon season, and strengthen community ownership of water assets by formally handing them over to Gram Panchayats through the Jal Arpan programme.
