China objects to India naming 28 strategic locations in Ladakh

Published: 13 October 2026 · 1 min read

What Happened

China has opposed India’s decision to assign standardised names to 28 locations and geographical features in Ladakh. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning called the move “illegal and invalid” and reiterated Beijing’s claim over areas in the western sector of the India-China boundary. India had formally identified the locations on its official map on October 2. The list includes Gogra and Hot Spring, which were friction points during the 2020 India-China military standoff, along with several peaks, passes, glaciers, valleys and other geographical features.

Key Takeaways

The naming dispute highlights continuing differences between India and China over the Ladakh border, even after disengagement efforts following the 2020 standoff.
