Destined to Die at 16, Blessed to Live Forever: The Story of Chiranjivi Markandeya
What Happened
Long ago, a sage named Mrikandu and his wife Marudmati had no children. They prayed to Lord Shiva with intense devotion for many years. Pleased with their penance, Shiva appeared and offered them a choice: (i) A son who would be brilliant, virtuous, and devoted, but live only 16 years, or (ii) son who would live long but be foolish and unrighteous. The couple chose the first option. Soon, a radiant child named Markandeya was born. As he grew, he became a great devotee of Lord Shiva. When Markandeya was nearing his sixteenth birthday, his parents became sorrowful. They finally told him about the destiny decreed at his birth. Instead of fearing death, Markandeya increased his devotion. On the day he was destined to die, he sat before a Shiva Lingam, chanting prayers and embracing it with unwavering faith. At the appointed hour, Yama, the god of death, arrived riding his buffalo and cast his noose to capture the boy's soul. But Markandeya clung tightly to the Shiva Lingam. Yama's noose accidentally wrapped around both Markandeya and the Lingam. That was a grave mistake. Suddenly, the Lingam split open and Lord Shiva emerged in a fierce form known as Kalantaka, the Destroyer of Death. Furious that his devotee had been threatened, Shiva struck Yama with his trident and defeated him. The gods pleaded with Shiva to revive Yama, because without death the balance of the universe would collapse. Shiva restored Yama but granted Markandeya a unique boon: He would remain forever young, free from death, and be remembered as one of the Chiranjivis (immortal beings). From that day, Shiva became famous as Mrityunjaya, the Conqueror of Death.
