What Happened

Essar Oil & Gas has secured five coal-bed methane (CBM) blocks across West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana under the government’s 2025 and 2026 Special CBM bidding rounds. The blocks add about 1,281 sq km of acreage and an estimated 6.6 TCF of gas-in-place resources. Two blocks will expand its Raniganj footprint, while the Telangana blocks mark its entry into the Godavari Valley CBM region.

Key Takeaways

Essar Oil & Gas already produces about 9.5 lakh standard cubic metres of gas a day, accounting for nearly 50% of India’s CBM production, according to the company. It aims to eventually contribute 5% of India’s natural gas production by developing its CBM portfolio further.
