What Happened

1953: Andhra State Created. India's first state formed on a linguistic basis came into existence when the Telugu-speaking regions were separated from the Madras State. This later became Andhra Pradesh in 1956. 1949: People's Republic of China Founded. Mao Zedong proclaimed the establishment of the People's Republic of China in Beijing, a turning point in global geopolitics and the Cold War. This remains China's National Day. 1960: Nigeria became independent from British colonial rule, emerging as Africa's most populous nation. 1958: India officially introduced the metric system of weights and measures, transitioning away from colonial-era complex weight units.
