What Happened

1862: Enactment of the Indian Penal Code: The Indian Penal Code (IPC) was officially notified under British rule, laying down the foundational criminal code of India, which came into effect on January 1, 1863. 1973: The Yom Kippur War Begins: A coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria launched a massive surprise joint attack on Israeli positions on the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur, triggering a major multi-week Middle Eastern conflict. 1944 – Foundations of the UN: The historic Dumbarton Oaks Conference concluded in Washington, D.C., where the US, UK, USSR, and China finalized the proposals that formed the framework of the United Nations. 2010: Launch of Instagram: The popular photo and video-sharing social network Instagram was officially launched by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger on the iOS App Store, forever reshaping digital communication. 1981: Anwar Sadat was assassinated by Islamic fundamentalists during a military parade in Cairo. Sadat had previously shared the Nobel Peace Prize for signing the 1978 Camp David Accords with Israel.
