What Happened

1905: Indian leaders formally launched the Swadeshi Movement at a historic meeting in Kolkata to protest the British decision to partition Bengal. 1941: India lost one of its greatest literary figures, Rabindranath Tagore, on 7 August 1941. The Nobel laureate wrote India's national anthem Jana Gana Mana and remains a towering figure in Indian literature and culture. 2021: Neeraj Chopra won his historic Olympic gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. 1942: U.S. Marines landed at Guadalcanal, starting the first major Allied offensive in the Pacific during World War II.
