What Happened

1942: Quit India Movement Begins. Mahatma Gandhi gave his famous"Do or Die" call, triggering a nationwide movement against British rule. This became a turning point in India's freedom struggle. 1936: India's First National Park Established Corbett National Park (then Hailey National Park) was established, becoming India's first national park and laying the foundation for wildlife conservation in the country. 1967: ASEAN Founded The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was established in Bangkok by Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand to promote regional cooperation and economic growth. Today it is one of the world's most influential regional blocs. 1984 – P.T. Usha Creates History At the Los Angeles Olympics, India's P.T. Usha set a national record in the women's 400m hurdles and narrowly missed an Olympic medal by just 1/100th of a second, one of Indian sport's most famous moments. 1988: Myanmar's "8888 Uprising" A massive pro-democracy movement erupted in Myanmar on 8-8-88, becoming one of the country's largest popular uprisings against military rule. 1945: Soviet Union Declares War on Japan Near the end of World War II, the Soviet Union entered the war against Japan and launched an offensive into Manchuria.
