What Happened

1967: Outer Space Treaty comes into force. The landmark treaty governing the peaceful exploration and use of outer space officially entered force. It prohibits nations from claiming sovereignty over celestial bodies such as the Moon and bans the placement of nuclear weapons in space. 1970: Fiji gains independence from Britain 1911: The Wuchang Uprising. This armed rebellion against the ruling Qing dynasty broke out in China, serving as the catalyst for the Xinhai Revolution. It eventually led to the collapse of over two millennia of imperial rule and the establishment of the Republic of China. 1946: The Noakhali Massacre, a dark chapter in Indian history commenced on this day in the Noakhali district of Bengal (now Bangladesh), where massive communal riots and violence erupted just a year before partition.
