What Happened
1967: Death of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia – The highly influential Indian freedom fighter, political philosopher, and socialist leader passed away in New Delhi 1976: Indian Airlines Flight 171 Crash – Tragically, an Indian Airlines Sud Aviation Caravelle suffered a catastrophic engine fire shortly after takeoff from Bombay, crashing and killing all 95 people on board. 1492: Columbus Lands in the Americas – Genoese explorer Christopher Columbus’s Spanish expedition made landfall on a Caribbean island in the Bahamas (which he named San Salvador). This event initiated centuries of transatlantic European exploration and colonization. 1999: Military Coup in Pakistan – General Pervez Musharraf overthrew the democratically elected government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in a swift, bloodless coup d'état. 2002: Coordinated bombings by Islamic militants ripped through a tourist district in Bali, Indonesia, killing 202 people.
