What Happened

1784: Pitt's India Act Passed The British Parliament passed Pitt's India Act, bringing the East India Company's administration under greater British government control. It became a key milestone in colonial governance of India. 1936: Death of Freedom fighter Bhikaji Cama, one of the earliest champions of India's independence movement and known for unfurling an early version of the Indian flag abroad, passed away in Bombay. 1795: Maratha forces achieved a major victory at the Battle of Kharda against the Nizam of Hyderaba 1961: East Germany sealed the border between East and West Berlin, marking the start of the construction of the Berlin Wall. 1943: First Indian RBI Governor Chintamanrao Deshmukh became the first Indian to be appointed Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. 1956: National Highways Act Approved The Indian Parliament approved the National Highways Act, laying the foundation for the country's national highway network. 1997: Vishaka Guidelines The Supreme Court issued the landmark Vishaka Guidelines against sexual harassment at workplaces, a major step in protecting women's rights in India.
