What Happened
1500: Portuguese Reach Calicut Portuguese explorer Pedro Álvares Cabral arrived in Calicut (present-day Kozhikode, Kerala), strengthening early European trade links with India and paving the way for Portuguese influence on the Indian coast. 1993: Oslo Accords Signed Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) formally signed the Oslo Peace Accords in Washington, a landmark attempt to advance Middle East peace. 2008: Five synchronized bomb blasts ripped through crowded areas in Delhi, India, killing at least 30 people. 1933: The Straw Hat Riots began in New York City, where mobs of men and boys began a multi-day spree of smashing straw hats because they were worn past the traditional end-of-summer cutoff date.
