What Happened

1947: India became an independent nation. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru raised the national flag at the Red Fort in Delhi and gave his famous "Tryst with Destiny" speech. 1914: The Panama Canal opened to traffic, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. 1945: Korea was liberated from Japanese colonial rule, a day now celebrated as Gwangbokjeol in South Korea and National Liberation Day in North Korea. 1945: Japan Surrenders in World War II. Emperor Hirohito announced Japan's surrender, effectively ending World War II and bringing one of history's deadliest conflicts to a close. 1975: Bangladesh Coup- Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding leader of Bangladesh, was assassinated during a military coup, a turning point in the country's political history. 1948 – Independent India's First Olympic Gold. Indian hockey team defeated Great Britain 4-0 at the London Olympics, winning independent India's first Olympic gold medal and becoming a powerful symbol of national pride.
