What Happened

1757: The East India Company minted its first official rupee coin at the Calcutta mint. 1953: Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh of Iran was overthrown in a coup backed by the US and UK. 1960: The Soviet Union launched Sputnik 5, successfully carrying dogs and other animals into space and bringing them back alive. 1991: Communist hardliners launched an unsuccessful three-day coup against Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. 1945: Subhas Chandra Bose's Plane Crash According to official records, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was reported to have died following an air crash in Taihoku (present-day Taipei). The circumstances remain one of independent India's most debated historical mysteries.
