What Happened

1639: Madras (modern-day Chennai) was founded by the British East India Company after acquiring land from local Nayak rulers. 1894: Mahatma Gandhi founded the Natal Indian Congress in South Africa to fight discrimination against Indians. 2017: The Supreme Court of India declared instant triple talaq (talaq-e-biddat) unconstitutional. 1950: Althea Gibson became the first Black player to compete in the US National Tennis Championships, breaking a major racial barrier in tennis.
