1825: Uruguay declared its independence from the Brazilian Empire, an anniversary celebrated today as National Independence Day. 1944: Paris was liberated from Nazi German occupation by the Free French 2nd Armored Division and Allied troops. 1991: Belarus declared its independence from the collapsing Soviet Union. 2012: NASA's Voyager 1 officially became the first human-made object to cross into interstellar space. 2020: Africa Declared Free of Wild Polio. The World Health Organization officially certified the African region free of indigenous wild poliovirus after years of vaccination efforts.
