What Happened

1896 (The Shortest War): The Anglo-Zanzibar War erupted and concluded in just 38 to 40 minutes, making it the shortest recorded war in history after British warships shelled the palace of Zanzibar. 1883 (Cataclysmic Eruption): The volcanic island of Krakatoa in Indonesia underwent its most violent series of explosions. The blasts generated massive tsunamis and claimed over 36,000 lives, producing what is considered the loudest sound in recorded history. 1991: Moldova officially declared its independence from the collapsing Soviet Union.
