What Happened

1833: The Slavery Abolition Act received royal assent in the British Parliament, effectively beginning the abolition of slavery across most of the British Empire. 1944: Paris was liberated from Nazi German control by Allied forces and the French Resistance during World War II. 1963: Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial during the historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. 1914: First Major Naval Battle of World War I. The Battle of Heligoland Bight took place between British and German naval forces, becoming the first major naval engagement of World War I.
