What Happened

2016: India Announces Surgical Strikes Across LoC. The Indian Army announced that it had carried out surgical strikes on terrorist launch pads across the Line of Control following the Uri terror attack. The operation became one of the most significant military actions in recent Indian history. 1959: Indian swimmer Arati Saha became the first Asian woman to swim across the English Channel, a landmark achievement in Indian sports history. 1993: India set up the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to protect and promote human rights across the country. 1977: India and Bangladesh signed an agreement on sharing the waters of the Ganga River, an important milestone in bilateral relations. 1914: German Cruiser Emden Bombards Madras, During World War I, the German warship SMS Emden shelled Madras (now Chennai), one of the few direct attacks on Indian soil during the war. 1938: The Munich Agreement: Leaders from Germany, Great Britain, France, and Italy signed the Munich Agreement, allowing Nazi Germany to annex the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia.
