What Happened

1993: Latur (Killari) Earthquake Devastates Maharashtra. One of India's deadliest earthquakes struck the Latur-Osmanabad region of Maharashtra, killing thousands and reshaping India's disaster-management policies. 1996: Madras Officially Renamed Chennai. The Centre approved the Tamil Nadu government's decision to rename Madras as Chennai, marking a significant cultural and administrative change. 1989: INS Shalki Launched. India launched INS Shalki, the country's first indigenously built submarine, a milestone in India's naval and defence manufacturing capabilities. 1999: India Successfully Tests Akash Missile. India successfully test-fired the Akash surface-to-air missile, an important achievement in indigenous missile development. 1966: Botswana became an independent nation after ending British colonial rule.
