FSSAI flags Horlicks, Nescafé products over misleading claims

Published: 18 October 2026 · 1 min read

What Happened

FSSAI has issued notices to Nestlé India and Hindustan Unilever (HUL) over alleged misleading claims and regulatory non-compliances involving multiple products. For HUL, FSSAI flagged claims on Horlicks Women’s Plus, including those relating to bone strength and “healthy muscles”. It also considered the “No Added Sugar” claim misleading because the product contains maltodextrin. Claims concerning “healthy birth weight” on Horlicks Mother’s Plus Kesar were also questioned. For Nestlé India, the regulator raised issues with inconsistent descriptions on Nescafé Ready-to-Drink products, including differences between “Flavoured Milk” and “Dairy Based Drink” declarations. It separately flagged Resource Renal Vanilla Flavour Powder, saying the required prior approval for the specialised product had not been obtained.

Key Takeaways

The companies have been asked to respond to FSSAI’s notices. In HUL’s case, the regulator said an unsatisfactory response could lead to further action under food-safety laws.
