What Happened

Mansukh Mandaviya, India’s Sports Minister, has announced a 10-member Task Force to assess the feasibility of bringing Formula 1 back to India by 2028. Chaired by Yugal Kishore Joshi of NITI Aayog, the panel will create a roadmap for reviving motorsports, address taxation and regulatory hurdles, and evaluate infrastructure and investment requirements. India last hosted an F1 race at the Buddh International Circuit in 2013.

Key Takeaways

A successful F1 return could boost India’s global sporting profile, tourism, infrastructure investment and motorsports ecosystem. The challenge will be resolving the taxation and bureaucratic issues that led to the Indian Grand Prix being dropped after 2013. Importantly, 2028 is currently a target, not a confirmed race date.
