Government Has No Immediate Plan To Raise Ethanol Blending Beyond 20%
What Happened
Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the Centre has no immediate intention to increase ethanol blending in petrol beyond the current 20%. He said 20% was the target and there is “no desire, just now” to go beyond it. India has already rolled out E20 petrol, containing 20% ethanol and 80% petrol. Puri also defended the E20 programme against criticism, saying it had helped save ₹1.6 lakh crore, of which ₹1.4 lakh crore went back to farmers.
Key Takeaways
The government is signalling that E20 will remain India’s ethanol-blending level for now, with no immediate plan to mandate a higher blend for regular petrol vehicles.
