Government Steps In to Control Rice Prices, Gives Five Southern States Power to Set Stock Limits

Published: 6 November 2026 · 1 min read

What Happened

The Centre has allowed Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Telangana to impose stock limits on rice and paddy wherever necessary until January 31, 2027. It has also made weekly stock declarations mandatory for traders, wholesalers, retailers and rice millers across India through the Food Stock Portal. The move comes amid rising rice prices linked partly to uneven monsoon rainfall. Additionally, the government has doubled its rice sale target under the Open Market Sale Scheme from 25 lakh tonnes to 50 lakh tonnes and increased Bharat Rice allocations to improve market supply.

Key Takeaways

The measures aim to prevent hoarding, increase market availability and control rising retail prices. More government rice supplies could provide relief to consumers, while traders and millers will face closer monitoring and stricter reporting requirements.
