Govt Starts Onion Buffer Sales Ahead of Festival Demand Surge
What Happened
The Centre has begun a targeted release of onions from buffer stocks to ensure adequate supply and moderate seasonal price pressures ahead of festivals and the wedding season. The first Kanda Express has been dispatched from Nashik to Delhi-NCR, while supplies are also being sent to major cities across the country. Onions from buffer stocks will be sold at ₹35 per kg through NCCF, NAFED, Safal and Kendriya Bhandar outlets.
Key Takeaways
With onion production estimated at 307.37 lakh metric tonnes and over 1.21 lakh metric tonnes already procured for the government buffer, authorities say supplies remain comfortable and interventions are aimed at preventing sharp price increases during the festive season.
