Hot days linked to fewer births in France and Italy, studies find

What Happened

Two new studies found that days with average temperatures of 25°C or above were associated with about 360 fewer births in France and 192 fewer births in Italy. The decline appeared nine to 10 months after hot-weather exposure, pointing to fewer conceptions during warmer periods. Researchers said possible explanations include heat-related effects on reproductive health as well as changes in sexual behaviour, though the studies cannot establish these mechanisms as the cause.

Key Takeaways

The studies show an association, not definitive causation, and estimate that the overall effect is relatively small. Researchers say family norms and financial pressures remain the main explanations for Europe’s falling fertility.
