India Clears Regulatory Path For 100% Ethanol-Compatible Cars
What Happened
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has amended the Central Motor Vehicles Rules to recognise E100 alongside E85 in emission standards, fuel specifications and testing requirements for flex-fuel vehicles. E100 is intended for vehicles specifically designed and certified to operate on very high ethanol blends. Importantly, regular petrol and E20-compatible vehicles cannot use E85 or E100, and existing vehicle owners are not required to modify or switch their cars.
Key Takeaways
The move clears the regulatory path for E100-compatible vehicles while supporting India’s push to reduce dependence on imported crude oil through greater use of domestically produced ethanol.
