Published: 9 September 2026 · 1 min read

What Happened

India launched the advanced Ocean Research Vessel (ORV) Sagar Manthan at Kolkata’s Rishi Bankim Shipyard. Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) for the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), the vessel is designed to support deep-sea surveys, climate research, ocean mapping, and exploration under the government’s Deep Ocean Mission.

Key Takeaways

Sagar Manthan strengthens India's self-reliance in ocean research and maritime science. Equipped with advanced systems and capable of operating in harsh conditions, including the Southern Ocean, it will help study climate change, seabed resources, disaster preparedness, and marine ecosystems while gradually replacing the 43-year-old ORV Sagar Kanya.
