India Looks To US LNG To Diversify Supplies Under Qatar Contract
What Happened
Petronet LNG, India’s largest gas importer, is discussing with Qatar the possibility of sourcing some US LNG under its renewed supply contract from 2028. Qatar has indicated it is willing to consider supplying part of the contracted volume from alternative sources it has tied up. Petronet currently has a contract for 7.5 million tonnes of LNG annually from Qatar. The agreement, expiring in April 2028, has been renewed for another 20 years through 2048.
Key Takeaways
India is looking to diversify LNG sourcing after Middle East disruptions exposed supply risks. Bringing US-sourced cargoes under the Qatar contract could provide Petronet greater geographic flexibility while retaining its long-term supply arrangement with Qatar.
