What Happened

India’s domestic automobile sales rose 18.2% year-on-year to 83.88 lakh units during July-September 2026, according to SIAM. Passenger vehicles jumped 30.7% to 13.61 lakh units, two-wheelers rose 15.2% to 64.33 lakh, while three-wheelers and commercial vehicles grew 23.6% and 28.7%, respectively. All four segments recorded their highest-ever Q2 sales.

Key Takeaways

SIAM attributed the growth to factors including improved affordability after GST 2.0, steady rural demand, festive buying and strong financing. SUVs remained dominant, accounting for 68% of passenger-vehicle sales. The industry remains cautiously optimistic amid inflation, interest-rate and geopolitical risks.
