What Happened

King Muchukunda was a righteous ruler and a great devotee of the gods. During a long war between the Devas and Asuras, the gods sought his help. Muchukunda fought for them tirelessly for years. While Muchukunda was assisting the gods in heaven, many years passed on Earth. By the time the war ended, entire generations of his family had passed away, and the kingdom he once ruled no longer existed. When the war finally ended, the gods offered him a boon. Muchukunda did not ask for wealth, power, or immortality. Instead, he said: "I am exhausted. Everyone I knew is gone. I have nowhere to return. Grant me uninterrupted rest." The gods then blessed him with a unique boon: "Sleep as long as you wish. Anyone who disturbs your sleep will be reduced to ashes the moment you look at them." Muchukunda entered a mountain cave and fell into a deep sleep. Ages later, Lord Krishna was being pursued by the powerful warrior Kalayavana. Rather than engage him directly, Krishna led him into Muchukunda's cave. Mistaking the sleeping king for Krishna, Kalayavana kicked him. Muchukunda awoke. The moment his eyes opened, Kalayavana was instantly reduced to ashes by the power of the boon. Soon after, Muchukunda realized that even more time had passed. Standing before him was Lord Krishna himself. The king understood that everything worldly, including kingdoms, victories, and fame, eventually disappears with time. Only devotion and spiritual wisdom remain. Renouncing all worldly desires, Muchukunda left for the Himalayas to spend the rest of his life in meditation and devotion.

Key Takeaways

Time is the greatest conqueror. Kingdoms rise and fall, generations come and go, but spiritual wisdom and devotion outlast the passage of ages.
