Madras High Court Says Non-Hindus Need Undertaking To Enter Agamic Temples
What Happened
The Madras High Court ruled that non-Hindus cannot enter Agamic temples in Tamil Nadu without giving the prescribed undertaking affirming reverence for the presiding deity and willingness to follow the temple’s customs. The Court clarified that its ruling is confined to Agamic temples. The Bench also criticised instances of politicians and political workers entering temples without showing due reverence, observing that temple customs cannot be compromised for displays of “Chamchagiri and optics.” At the same time, it said historical caste-based restrictions on Hindu worshippers cannot survive constitutional scrutiny.
Key Takeaways
The ruling seeks to protect established customs of Agamic temples while making clear that unconstitutional caste-based exclusions of Hindu worshippers cannot be justified in the name of tradition.
