Microsoft Unveils AI System That Diagnoses Patients Step by Step Like Clinicians
What Happened
Microsoft researchers have developed an AI diagnostic system called MAI-DxO that evaluates patients sequentially, selecting questions, examinations and tests before reaching a diagnosis, rather than analyzing all information at once. In a peer-reviewed study published in Science, the system was more than twice as accurate as general physicians in diagnosing over 300 complex medical cases and also outperformed doctors in simulations based on emergency-department cases.
Key Takeaways
The research suggests AI may eventually assist clinicians with difficult diagnostic workups by reasoning through cases step by step. However, the tool has been tested primarily in simulated and benchmark environments, and researchers say further real-world clinical evaluation is still required.
