Musk Welcomes Reliance Clarification on Jio, Starlink Clearances
What Happened
Elon Musk responded “Much appreciated” after Reliance Industries said Jio’s satellite services are also awaiting government clearances. Reliance said India applies the same process to Indian and foreign applicants and that it welcomes competition from Starlink. Starlink separately said it has worked with Indian regulators and industry for more than five years and is ready to connect India with high-speed internet.
Key Takeaways
The exchange comes amid delays in satellite internet launches in India. Starlink, Jio’s satellite arm and Bharti-backed Eutelsat OneWeb have licences, but none yet has the security clearance needed to launch services, according to Reuters.
