New Cement Alternative Could Slash Concrete’s Carbon Footprint

Published: 23 October 2026 · 1 min read

What Happened

Researchers at Trinity College Dublin, working with Gannon Eco and McGrath Quarries, are converting red mud, a waste product from alumina refining, into lower-carbon construction material. The technology has now moved from laboratory development to industrial trials. Tests found that replacing 20-30% of Portland cement with red mud produced comparable compressive strength, while geopolymer formulations showed a 67.8-79.8% lower carbon footprint than standard CEM II-A/L cement across raw materials, transport and manufacturing.

Key Takeaways

The technology could tackle two environmental problems at once: reusing alumina-industry waste while substantially reducing the carbon footprint of cement-based construction materials.
