New Review Questions Ergonomic Fixes For Workplace Pain

Published: 28 October 2026 · 1 min read

What Happened

An updated Cochrane review analysed 20 trials involving 2,478 workers with work-related arm, neck or shoulder problems. It found ergonomic changes such as workstation adjustments, specialised equipment and ergonomic education may make little to no difference to short-term pain, and probably little to no difference to function, recovery or sick leave. The evidence ranged from low to moderate certainty, and researchers said better-quality studies are still needed. Overall, ergonomic approaches appeared less effective than exercise, although benefits may differ for specific conditions.

Key Takeaways

Ergonomic equipment alone may not be enough to treat existing neck, shoulder or arm pain. The findings do not prove ergonomics is useless, but they challenge the idea that workstation changes reliably relieve established pain.
