New Study Finds Hidden Heart Risks From Light at Night

Published: 11 September 2026 · 1 min read

What Happened

A study of more than 11,000 people found that exposure to light during the night was associated with changes in the heart’s structure and function. Researchers observed thickening of heart chamber walls, reduced flexibility of the heart muscle, and other early signs of impaired heart function among people exposed to higher levels of nighttime light. Participants wore light sensors for seven days and underwent cardiac MRI scans about three years later.

Key Takeaways

Researchers say light pollution and excessive nighttime light exposure may be an overlooked cardiovascular risk factor. The findings suggest that simple measures such as keeping bedrooms darker, reducing screen exposure before sleep, and limiting artificial light at night could help support long-term heart health.
