What Happened

The Bombay High Court said its earlier order imposing a total ban on bursting firecrackers on public roads and streets will apply throughout the year and across all festivals. A bench of Justices G S Kulkarni and Neela Gokhale cited air and noise pollution and said toxic pollution particularly affects children and senior citizens. The court directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board to issue notices stating that firecrackers will not be permitted at public places including streets, lanes and footpaths.

Key Takeaways

The restriction is not limited to Diwali or another particular festival. The court clarified that its September 22 order covering public roads and streets will remain applicable throughout the year.
