No more nameless calls: DoT mandates caller-name display

Published: 15 October 2026 · 1 min read

What Happened

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has directed telecom operators to roll out Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) from November 1, 2026, initially on 4G and newer networks, including 5G. Saved numbers will show the name stored in the recipient’s contacts, while unsaved domestic numbers will display the caller’s name from the originating telecom operator’s subscriber records.

Key Takeaways

The feature will be available by default without separate activation. International numbers will be labelled “International Call”, while extending CNAP to 2G, 3G and landlines will be considered separately.
