'No More ‘Pay Extra to Get Picked’: Govt Orders Cab Apps to End Advance Tip Prompts

Published: 13 August 2026 · 1 min read

What Happened

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has directed cab aggregators to remove pre-ride tip prompts such as “Advance Tip”, “Choose an Add-on”, or messages suggesting that tipping could improve the chances of getting a driver. The government says tips must remain voluntary and only be offered after a ride is completed. MoRTH said such practices violate the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines, 2025 and may be misleading for consumers.

Key Takeaways

Passengers can still tip drivers, but only after the journey ends.
