PLA Pullback at LAC, But China Retains Key Military Presence

Published: 14 September 2026 · 1 min read

What Happened

India’s Defence Ministry said China significantly reduced its People’s Liberation Army (PLA) deployment along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) during 2025. However, China continues to maintain 10 Combined Arms Brigade-sized formations along the LAC and in traditional training areas. The report linked the reduction to increased political, diplomatic and military engagement between the two countries.

Key Takeaways

While border tensions have eased compared to previous years, India has said its own deployment remains robust and prepared for any contingency. The ministry noted that China still retains substantial military capabilities and infrastructure near the border, meaning the security challenge has not disappeared.
