Project Cheetah Milestone: India’s Cheetah Count Reaches 52
What Happened
Four years after the launch of Project Cheetah, India's cheetah population has risen to 52, including 32 cubs born in the country. Of the total, 49 cheetahs are in Kuno National Park and three are in Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary. The population includes surviving cheetahs brought from Namibia, South Africa and Botswana, along with their offspring born in India.
Key Takeaways
The survival of breeding females and second-generation cubs marks a major conservation milestone for Project Cheetah. The next phase will focus on expanding habitats beyond Kuno and building a long-term, self-sustaining cheetah population across India.
