Scientists Create Solar Cells That Work Deep Underwater

Researchers from China have successfully demonstrated underwater solar cells operating at a depth of 10 metres (33 feet) in the South China Sea. The solar modules generated 324 megawatt-hours of energy during a two-hour test and showed enough durability to potentially operate underwater for about 5.5 years. The technology was tested on underwater robots and is designed to power submerged sensors, cameras and communication systems.
