Scientists Find Genetic Clues Behind Severe COVID-19 in Children

Published: 7 October 2026 · 1 min read

What Happened

Researchers from the University of Southampton, the University of Cape Town and international partners identified patterns of gene activity linked to severe COVID-19 in children. Analyzing blood samples from 333 children in South Africa, the team found more than 5,000 genes expressed differently in severe respiratory infections and identified 82 genes that could distinguish severe COVID-19 cases from mild or asymptomatic infections.

Key Takeaways

The findings offer new insights into how children's immune systems respond to severe infections and could help researchers develop biomarkers to identify high-risk patients and potential targets for future treatments. The study also found similarities between severe COVID-19, RSV and tuberculosis infections, suggesting shared biological pathways.
