Scientists Identify 1,260 DNA Variants Linked To Personality Traits
What Happened
One of the largest genetic studies of personality analysed data from 46 research groups and up to 1.14 million people, identifying 1,260 genetic variants associated with the Big Five personality traits: extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism and openness. Of these, 824 had not previously been linked to the corresponding personality trait. Researchers also found genetic overlap between personality and a wide range of health conditions, behaviours and life outcomes, including mental and physical health, exercise habits and residential choices. However, each genetic variant has only a tiny effect, and the study does not suggest that DNA determines an individual’s personality or future.
Key Takeaways
There is no single “personality gene.” Thousands of small genetic influences contribute to personality, while environment and life experiences remain important in shaping who someone becomes.
