Solar Firms Seek Extension Of Local Sourcing Deadline To December 2027

Published: 2 November 2026 · 1 min read

What Happened

The Renewable Energy Manufacturers Association of India, representing non-integrated solar-module manufacturers with 160 GW of nameplate capacity, has asked NITI Aayog for more time to comply with mandatory domestic solar-cell sourcing rules. The industry body is seeking an extension until December 2027, citing insufficient availability of approved locally made cells. The association says India has around 95 GW of producible TOPCon module capacity but only 15.8 GW of enlisted TOPCon cell capacity, leaving standalone module makers particularly exposed to the supply shortage.

Key Takeaways

Module manufacturers support domestic manufacturing but argue that local cell capacity needs more time to catch up with module production. The requested extension has not yet been approved by the government.
