Southeast Asia’s Largest Wind Farm Fuels Laos’ Green-Energy Push
What Happened
Laos is accelerating its push into wind energy after the 600 MW Monsoon Wind Power Project began operating in August 2025. The $700 million project, featuring 133 turbines, is Asia’s first cross-border wind project and Southeast Asia’s largest wind farm, supplying electricity to Vietnam. Laos already has 90 hydropower plants, but hydro output falls during the dry season and suitable new sites are becoming scarcer. A Laos official said another 10 to 15 wind projects are under development.
Key Takeaways
Wind power could help Laos diversify beyond hydropower and expand electricity exports, although its domestic grid still faces outages and infrastructure constraints.
